How to use Add Page Numbers

This tool draws new, searchable text onto selected PDF pages; it does not change page labels in the PDF catalog or edit the document's existing text. You can start at a chosen page and number, then use a plain number or a “Page N of total” label. Choose from six top or bottom positions, a font size, color, and margin offset.

Steps

  1. 1Choose a valid, unencrypted PDF no larger than 50 MB and 500 pages.
  2. 2Set the first page to number and the starting number; earlier pages remain unchanged.
  3. 3Choose the label format, position, Helvetica text size, color, and edge offset.
  4. 4Create and download the copy. Reopen it and inspect the first and last numbered pages, including the margins.

Privacy: The PDF is read and rewritten in your browser. Document bytes are not sent to a PDF4.IN processing endpoint; the generated copy is held in browser memory until you download or leave the page.

Supported scope: Numbering is limited to 50 MB and 500 pages. Every page receiving a number must have zero rotation and an uncropped page box; mixed page dimensions are handled using each page's own size. Labels use standard Helvetica with basic Latin digits/text. The tool checks that the label fits the page and refuses a layout that does not.

Add Page Numbers FAQs

Can I leave a cover page unnumbered?
Yes. Set the first page to number. Pages before it remain in the output without an added number.
Where can the number appear?
Choose top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, or bottom-right. The numeric offset sets the distance from the selected page edge.
Are rotated or cropped pages supported?
Not for pages that receive a number. The tool refuses rotated pages and pages whose crop box differs from their media box because edge placement could be wrong.
Can pages have different dimensions?
Yes. The tool calculates placement from each page's own width and height, then checks that the label and margins fit. Inspect pages with very small dimensions.
Will it preserve the original PDF?
The original file is left as-is; the tool produces a separate rewritten PDF with added text. The output is not a secure redaction or an edit to existing page text.
